6th graders will be going to Shady Creek this week!   We will see you
in LifeLong Fitness on Monday then you get to go down the hill to
Shady Creek until Friday.    We will get all makeup test done on Monday.
Both Fitness and stretching!  There is not much, you did great!

7th and 8th graders are switching sports all ready.   We will do a few days
of rugby and zone football then move on to soccer.  Your rugby/zone football
index card quiz will be Thursday.   6th graders will not have a quiz on this unit
but will have one on the next unit.   Monday we will get all makeup test done.
We do not have much, great job all!

A reminder on Loaner clothes:
You are allowed loaners on Monday/Tuesday,  whichever is your first day.
You must go to the office of McMaster, if a boy, or Blaylock, if a girl, and use
the clipboard to sign them out.  If we are not there quickly, wait patiently
near the office door.   After you bring YOUR clothes back to school, then take
home the loaners to wash.  Return the clean loaners to the same place you
checked them out.   You are only allowed one set of loaners at a time.
If you have classroom on Monday please still drop off you clothes to the
locker room.   We ask that you take your clothes home on Fridays to clean,
not in the middle of the week, unless really needed!
Any questions?  Please ask!!

Information on your quiz:
See previous blog for info on rugby. You need to know the 3 basic rules.
For zone football, I will give you a handout on Wednesday.
It is a game you have played before.  You score points depending on
which zone the play is complete.   Zone 1 is 1 point and zone 4 is 4 points.
You are only allowed forward plays.   Flags are used, no contact game.
Defense are allowed points also.   We will over the rules in class.

The weather should be nice after Monday so we hope to get outside!!
Please remember your PE uniform!  Everyone should be ready to
participate during class!

Have a fun, fit and fabulous week!

week of October 17th

We have just finished the 6 week progress reports.
I am sure you checked your grade and are happy with what you have earned.
Great job!
If you still need to turn things in so I can update your grade, please do so Monday.
I can update the grade Monday evening.  Remember it is only a progress check.

This week we are still in rugby/football.  We will begin games this week.
Go online and watch a few minutes of the game.  WE are playing flag rugby.
We do not tackle, we will use flags. We will keep the game safe.
Yes, there will be a quiz on this!

A few basic rules:

1. THE RULES

All the best games need rules, otherwise they fall into chaos. Rugby has many rules but we’re distilling things down to the following points.

i. The Fundamental Rule
The ball must never be passed or knocked forward from a player’s hands. It can be thrown sideways or backwards, or it can be kicked in any direction, but never passed forwards.
ii. Onside and Offside
Staying onside is crucial and should be the aim of every player. Whenever the ball is in play, any player who finds himself ahead of a team-mate carrying the ball, and who then actively attempts to play the ball, is deemed to be offside and likely to concede a penalty, taken from the place the offense was committed.
To score a try (worth 5 points), the player must simply place the ball on the ground with downward pressure in the in-goal area – the zone behind the goalposts.
Here is a link to the game.  http://www.rulesofsport.com/sports/rugby.html

If the weather is bad we will start the rest of our Fitness Testing.  A few still have
to finish the final mile, we will complete them on the next nice day.  Monday may
have unstable weather, but the rest of the week should be fine.  We will also begin
learning/reviewing the stretches that go with the muscles you have learned.  I will give you a
paper study guide and I will put more information on stretches here during the week.

All PE clothes are in, please come to class prepared!

Have a fun and fit week!

Actual handout:

Life Long Fitness Department

We believe that the development of life skills is the most important aspect of our program.  The students strive to develop a high level of fitness
while engaged in sport activities.  We incorporate both the mental and the physical in striving for the highest level of fitness.
All students can succeed!  Success breeds success.

Above all, we strive to make our classes as fun as possible.  We sincerely hope their experience through our department
is a positive and inspirational one that will instill the importance of “Fitness through Life”.

Please read the policies and procedures carefully, share the information with your parents, and keep handy for easy reference.
The procedures will establish our class culture for the school year.  The next page must be signed, by you and a parent/guardian,
and returned to your teacher.  Through the course of the year, it will help clear up any questions you or
your parents may have about our program.

Class Procedures, Expectations and Rules

In today’s society who you are and the character you possess is more important than any other single factor in determining long term success.  Your character is made up of many facets, the most important being, how you treat yourself and others, and how you react in a given situation.
Each of us is responsible for being a responsible, active citizen in our homes, school, community, and eventually the world.  Daily opportunities present themselves for us to become socially responsible.  All procedures and school rules will be followed every day.  They will become routine.

Locker Room Procedures

Each student will be issued a locker.  DO NOT GIVE YOUR COMBINATION TO ANYONE!  DO NOT ENTER ANY ONE ELSE’S LOCKER.
ALWAYS LOCK YOUR LOCKER!
Report any lost item to your P.E. teacher.
No one is allowed in the locker room without a teacher present.
Entering the locker room:
  • If locker room is locked, wait in a single file.
  • As you enter, do so patiently and politely.
In the locker room:
  • Use appropriate language and no whistling, horseplay or excessive noise.
  • Locker rooms will be locked after everyone leaves.

Equipment and Facilities

  • Report any damaged equipment immediately to your teacher.
  • Do not climb on fences, backstops, goalposts, baskets, or lockers.
  • Food, drink, and gum is prohibited in all indoor P.E. facilities. (Water is acceptable)

Activities

Most units are 3-6 weeks long and will usually include a written and/or skills exam.  We also have a classroom health unit during the winter trimester.   The health unit includes written work and homework.
We also have a Wellness Faire every year in March.  If you would like to volunteer please let us know.

Dress Code

  • Students are required to wear (ACMS) shorts and t-shirts during all activities. (must not be altered)  The cost is TEN dollars each for the shorts and t-shirts ($20.00 total)
  • Any color ATHLETIC SHOE with an arch is acceptable.
  • Students are required to print their first name and last initial on all P.E. clothes.
  • If a student forgets his/her clothes, we will provide clean “loaner” clothes that are signed out through the P.E. teachers.  See policy in your locker room.  You may not borrow clothes if you already have loaner clothes checked out.
  • All students will take their P.E. clothes home to wash weekly, for sanitary reasons.
  • Students cannot use P.E. clothes that belong to other students.

Medical Excuses

  • If you cannot participate in a P.E. activity, you must bring a note from a parent/guardian
  •               (good for 3 days) or doctor.  If you see a doctor we need to see the note.
    • >Notes must have the following: a) a parent/guardian or doctors signature
    •                                                    b) the dates to be excused and type of injury
  • You must suit out unless physically unable due to injury.
  • All long-term medicals (10 or more days) will be required to do written work.
  • If the student cannot participate in P.E. for an extended period of time, (handled case by case)  alternative activities will be provided.  These may include moving the child to another class situation or using them as an aide.
  • If your child has asthma, we will help them modify their activity level appropriately.      Consequences

Consequences will be aligned with ACMS and district policies. See ACMS handbook.

    Grading Procedures

Your physical education grade each trimester will be based on participation and unit grades.  The unit grade includes skill and knowledge used in an activity, written tests, and skills tests.  The participation/cooperation grade will be based on a point system.
Participation/cooperation grade:  As the trimester progresses, the student will have an opportunity to gain or lose points.
Ways to gain points:  Following classroom expectations weekly
                                     Outstanding effort and/or class leadership

Ways to lose points:  Wearing another student’s uniform
Non-suit and/or lack of effort or participation

Each week all instructors will update the students’ grades on the computer.  It is your responsibility to
keep informed of your current grade status.  If situations arise which need to be handled in a special
way, parents will be informed by phone call or in writing.  You can e-mail us if there are any situations
    that need to be clarified.

7th grade test helpful hints

Your test is on the 5 fitness components.
You need to know the 5 components, the definition and the test we do in class.
You also need to know the F.I.T. principle for cardiovascular(CV) and muscle endurance(ME).
It is the back side of the third page of the handout we worked on.

Know the formula for your training heart rate and HOW you got it.

Also think of a game we do in LLF that incorporates CV & ME.

You do use the concepts of overload, specificity and progression in improving your muscle endurance.  Plus, of course, short and long term goals.

We went over everything in class!  Study!  Know the concept of how to work out for these first 2 components.

It is important that you read the questions carefully, some are 2 parters.
Many you have to explain, not just list!

Eat a hearty breakfast and don't forget your handout!  It is due also!

6th grade test helpful hints

Your test is on the food groups and what to eat for a healthy breakfast.

For the food groups you need to know the actual groups like fruits and vegetables.
You also need to know the nutrient and what the nutrient is good for,
example is milk has calcium, which is good for your bones.
You also need to draw some foods in each food group.
And the serving size, plus what a serving looks like.
You need to be specific.
Feel free to add the information you learned today on fiber!  It can go in fruits and vegetables.

A healthy breakfast is the easy part!  We went over it today in class and all last week!
Scrambled eggs w/spinach, strawberries, vanilla yogurt and whole grain toast w/jam is a good example!     I want a food from each food group.

Study and eat a healthy breakfast so your brain is ready!

And don't forget your handout, it is due also!
