Do not get behind on your work, it is hard to get caught up at

For 6th graders water quiz.

Here are you helpful hints!

The quiz is on water.  It is on how water is good for you
and everything on the first page of your handout.  The fluid pyramid.
If you studied your water worksheet, you should be fine!
Know the functions of water for the body!
Like temperature regulation.

It is a short answer quiz, only 4 questions.
You must write in complete sentences and tell me what you know!

Remember, you must have your handout complete to take the quiz!
So don't forget to bring it!

Study and get a good nights rest!

See you in the morning.

Tuesday for 8th graders

I almost forgot to give you a few helpful hints for your quiz Wednesday.
So I will be generous.

There are many reasons we need fat.
One is dietary.  We need it for taste, essential nutrients and calories.
Another reason is for the body.  We need it as a long term source of energy, cushioning for our organs, and insulation.  Remember this from the past few years???

The 3 forms of energy balance are the calorie input versus calorie output.
If you consume more calories then you burn you will gain weight.
If you consume less then you burn you will lose, and if your
calorie input is the same as output you will remain the same.
When you answer this question, be clear about what happens if the
calorie input vs. output is not equal.
There are 2 parts to this question, answer both!

The last tidbit I will remind you about is why people are overfat.
There are many reasons, including medical & genetic. Lets avoid those for now, too
much unknown.
But the main reason people are is due to too many calories in and too little energy(calories) used.
There is also sedentary lifestyle and ease of access to unhealthy fast food.

So I hope you studied and these last few notes help you do well on the test!

See you tomorrow in class!

Remember to bring your study guide with you. They are due!

week of Dec 8th

It will be a busy week!

All three grades have a quiz this week.
Here are a FEW reminders.  Look back later for more.

6th grade has a water quiz: how many cups to drink & how water benefits your body

7th has a bone quiz: know the 3 spine sections, with number, and bones from the list.

8th grade has one on body composition: know body shapes, types, morphs and how dietary fat helps the body

I have classroom with 6 graders, 4th period 7th graders and 8th graders on Monday, so I will give you the weeks schedule then.  5th period 7th graders, on Tuesday you will get same info!
So that means quizzes must be after Monday and Tuesday! On the first classroom day take home all your notes so you can review.  We will review in class also.  On the day before your quiz I will update this blog with a few helpful hints, so check it out!

In the gym we are still playing volleyball.  We will work on serves and court position.

have a great week and STUDY for your quizzes, do not wait until the last minute!

Stay happy and healthy!

Sunday, October 12, 2014

Week of Oct 13th

We are starting another great week at school.
It is conference week, so mini days all week!

This is also the week we try to get all our fitness testing done.
We have the mile run almost done, make ups will be next week.
We still have push-ups, crunches, ht/wt, sit/reach and trunk lift to do this week.
We hope to get it all done this week, but also know with the larger classes it will not happen, so make-ups will run into next week.  We should be done within two weeks without a problem.

So practice a few of these skills at home.  They are the same ones we do every year and for the sixth graders you did them last year as 5th graders.  We do them at the beginning of the year so we can see where you stand now and so you know what areas you need to work on for the year.  Then we do them at the end of the year to see how much you have improved.  Our goal is for you to begun fit for life and not just learn sports.  We want you to be the best you can be in all aspects of fitness.
We always see constant improvement as all students get stronger and fitter every year.

Here are a few pointers to help you do well.
Practice the plank at home daily, this will help with your push-ups and crunches.
Do a few push-ups, 5-10 is fine.  Do 25-30 crunches daily also.
When doing push-ups make sure your back/body is straight by keeping your core tight.
Go down to 90 degree elbows and go at a 3 second count. Your hands should be wider then your shoulders, so when you bend your arms, they are at a right angle.
When doing crunches, legs are bent, arms are straight on the floor beside your thighs and you slide your arms about four inches. It is not a sit-up, just a crunch, your lower back stays on the ground.
Stretch daily after you exercise/do sports, especially your hamstrings and back muscles.
Staying flexible does help in all aspects of your active life.

These are all skills we have done in class already, so be ready to do the best you can this week.
Remember these tests are for you, it is not a competition, it is to help you know how fit you are now and what you need to do to become more fit.

Any questions, just ask in class.

We are here to help you be the best you can be!

Have a healthy and happy week.

Sunday, October 5, 2014

week of Oct 6th

We are moving right along here!

The end of this week is our first progress report.
So let's make sure all your work is up to date!

We are moving into our next sport and it will be rugby/zone football.
We will begin with rugby-no contact of course!

This week we have our stretching quiz and practice mile.
So be ready for both!
We may also have time at the end of the week for some final miles!
You can have a word bank for the stretching quiz if you chose.

Remember, do not stress too much about the mile, just do the best that you can!
We grade in Fitness class on effort and progress!
Your practice mile and final mile should be similar times, around 30 to 90 seconds of each other.
So yes, you have to try on both :)   We will take the better of the two times.

8th graders, you will have the action quiz next week, we will continue to review in class.
Make sure you have your notes so you know your opposing muscles!

It will be a wonderful week and the weather should be perfect!

Have a fun and fit week!

The strategy test will be on the court, I will see what you can do to score a point.
