week of October 19

Progress reports were last week.  Now we are on the last 6 weeks of the first trimester.
We are still in rugby, as long as the weather holds and we will be playing games
this week.  Look up the game online if you want.  Next week we will play flag football.

6th graders only have one day of class this week, we will play rugby.
There will be no Google CR assignment.  But be ready for your stretching test next week.
I will put info on the blog for you.

7/8th graders will have their stretching test this Wednesday.  No Google CR assignment either!
So study!

Still go on Google CR to see your grades and missing assignments.  A few are still behind on their
work.

Have fun and STUDY!

6/7th grade stretches:
I have started them for you!  With all stretches, you need to feel the stretch, so do the move until you do.

bicep- put straight arms behind you with thumbs up
tricep- pat your back w/elbow up & push down elbow with other arm
hamstring-sit down w/one leg straight, one bent & reach for your toes with both hands
quadricep-grab you ankle, bend that knee  and pull that leg behind you
gastrocnemius-get in high lunge position & lean forward
brachioradialis-hold one arm shoulder height in front of you and press down your entire hand with other hand
anterior deltoid - put straight arms behind you with thumbs down
posterior detoid -hold arms in front of you shoulder height and use one to pull back the other by the elbow, so it crosses your sternum
abdominals -lay down in forearm plank position, but put your hips/lower body on the ground and lift your shoulders up and forward
external obliques -form an "O" with both arms above your head and lean to the side without twisting
trapezius -put both arms straight in front of you, shoulder height and form a triangle with your hands, then roll your shoulders forward
latissimus dorsi - sit on knees and reach your upper body forward on the ground so your arms are reaching out straight
erector spinea - one leg is straight and one bent over it, knee up, on the ground, and twist your upper body to the side of your bent leg, so you are looking behind you.  Push against the outside of bent leg
gluteals -sit on ground, bent both legs and put one ankle on the other knee and lean into them
pectoralis -put both arms to your side, shoulder height, 90 degree angle, palms facing forward and pull back
soleus /achilles tendon -lunge position, but bring knees closer together and bend back knee
tibialis anterior - put back leg shoe laces facing the ground and lean forward with both legs bent, so you are trying to touch shoe laces to ground to the ground.  Stay balanced!

8th grade can figure out the rest, you already did them as homework!

Muscles/actions for 8th grade:

quadricep extend lower leg/knee, flex the hip
tibialis anterior dorsiflexion of the foot
gastrocnemius plantarflexion of the foot

posterior detoid abducts/extends/externally rotates the arm
abdominals flexes trunk
erector spinea exends trunk

week of October 12

We have just finished 6 weeks and progress reports are in!
If you have any questions please ask.

This week we have a lot of things going on.
Your muscle location test is Wednesday. (all grades)
Look back on your study guide and make sure you study!
Any clarifications?  Ask Monday!
Remember if there is a "*" near an answer, it is incorrect.

We start our new sports, which are zone football and rugby.
We will begin with rugby!

We will also score a few more fitness test - ht/wt and trunk lift.
They will only take about 10 minutes so we can do them before we go out to play.

For Google CR:
6/7th  grade will do muscle stretches. 6th grade can still work on paper.  If you have access
to Google CR try it there!
8th grade finish the actions.
We will begin/continue in class Monday.
When you cut and paste words from my blog, make sure you make it fit on the page.
Take your time and fix the document so I can correct and you can correct.

Many students have NOT turned in previous assignments, please do so.
The further you get behind the harder to keep up.

Stay healthy and fit!

week of October 6th

Another week of fun has gone by!

This week is a short week for all students.
The teachers have a work day Monday, but students get to sleep in!

I still made the assignments due Wednesday.  But we will work on them in class on Tuesday,
so you will be able to finish on time.  7/8th graders need to bring chrome books to class.
6th graders please bring your planners and a pencils.  We will begin class by helping you with your work.

6/7th graders assignment is to list all muscles and their locations on the body.
8th graders need to  describe 10 muscles and their actions.

7/8th graders need to do this assignment on google drive.
That way we can work together and fix mistakes.  And you will have a study guide!
Feel free to cut and paste the muscles from a previous blog.

If the 6th graders have access to a computer, feel free to sign up on Google Classroom for your
assignments.  I will give you the code Tuesday.

8th graders- To figure out the action, you need to know the stretch.  If the stretch lengthens the muscle, the actions shortens it.  You learned bones last year.  The action is directly related to movement of one or more bones and/or joints.  For the abdominals you USE them doing a crunch. The action is a flexion of the spine.  For trapezius you USE them by doing a shoulder shrug.  The action is to elevate the scapula.
Here are some keys words for you: elevate, rotate, adduct, abduct, flex, extend and stabilize.
Look up these words if you need to know what they mean.  I will help you understand the
anatomical context.
** I almost forgot.  8th grade has hearing van on Tuesday, so plenty of time to work on assignment!

The body is an amazing machine, let's work on making/keeping yours healthy and fit!

We are still in our pickle ball unit.

Make sure you are practicing your push ups and crunches at home:)

We will also have makeup miles this week.

Have a fun and fit week!

Sunday, September 27, 2015

For 7th graders you can turn it in by Google classroom.

We are also doing the final mile this week!

I have also listed your muscles below.
If you want to print them go for it!

Tuesday the 10th for 7/8th grade workout programs

Just a quick reminder...

That is the final cut off date.

This blog/dates are for MY classes!!!
Others can use the information, but we all have different turn in dates.

Have a great day!

Workout program #3

The workout programs are looking good.

A few reminders:
Yoga is muscle endurance, it is its own workout, not under flexibility as an after workout stretch.
Flexibility is where you stretch after your workout!   Stretching is done daily.
Body Composition IS your calorie (food) intake.
You need a basic and simple warmup and cool down, this can be the same all week long.
Stretching is not a cool down.
Do not just progress your workout by adding more repetitions.  Make it realistic.  Someone cannot do 3 sets of 400 pushups, 3 times a week.  And why should they as a marathoner? :>

8th grade needs to be specific about their food intake.  Is your athlete consuming enough calories for the workout?  Are they drinking enough water and electrolytes?  Are they getting the 3 main nutrients?  You should look at your athletic nutrition handout from this year and your 5 fitness components from last year to help you out. Or previous blogs for help on the 5 fitness components.

If you want me to look at it before you turn it in, email or show to me and I will help you out!

All completed assignments must be hard copies.  You can print them out at the library.
Please attach the cover page also.

All work is due March 9th (my classes)  If you need more time, you must talk to me.

Other students not in my class, but I am grading, ASAP.  But no later then Thursday please.
I need time to grade!

Have fun!

week of March 9

Last week of the winter trimester!
Please make sure you have all your work turned in!

Reminders:
Tahoe Safe Alliance is here this week for the 7 and 8th graders.

We are still in team handball in the gym.

6th grade- We have CR on Monday
7th grade - We start with gym
8th grade starts with CR and TSA

Wednesday is a mini day and all 3 classes have a M & M day!

Have a fun and fit week!

workout program # 2

Here are a few more helpful (hopefully) hints.

The introduction is where you tell me who you are training, age, ability and their goals.

Feel free to have the meals similar, I just want to know you know of a few good examples.
We do not want the athlete to be too bored with their foods.
The workouts can also be similar, just don't forget about progression.
Remember you can use your 5 fitness components worksheets to complete this.
or the info I gave you in the last blog.

Anything else?  Please ask!

stay happy and healthy!

week of March 2

Only a few more weeks of the winter trimester!

Please check your grades and make sure you have everything turned in.  A few people still need to turn in missed work.  The last day for all work is March 9th.  Please see me if you need more time.

This week is still team handball!  Classes are looking great!

In the CR you have your schedule.
One change is 6th grade- Weds is CR for review, then Thursday is your quiz.
5th period is FR-Gym-Gym-CR- Gym

Feel free to look at the other blog for info on the workout program.

6th grade your quiz is on labels, fast food and advertising.
7th and 8th we are working on your workout program.

We will be sending home notes about our guest speakers also.
The are opt out notes.  Do not sign unless you are NOT going to the lecture.
Tahoe Safe Alliance will be here the week of the 9th to speak with the 7 and 8th graders.
We will tell you more about it in class.

have a fun and fit week!

Workout program

Helpful hints for you!!

The easiest athlete to pick would be a marathoner.  The athlete will be elite and strong.
The workout is not for you, but you are training someone.  So make sure it is not easy.

The first thing you need to do is a grid sheet.  Like the example with the worksheet you got.
If you do not have it look in this weeks blog.  You can copy it or see me and I have copies.

Do the the five fitness components down the left side.
The days along the top. See below.

Then look at last years 5 fitness components to start filling out the form.
You want the workout to progress.  You need to use frequency, intensity and time.
If you don't have last years form, it is all online, or you can use a packet from someone in my class.
Or you can use last years workout to start,  As 8th graders you are adding/expanding on the food part.
I have seen the packet in everyones file, unless your file was lost.
Feel free to talk to people in my class or McMaster for help also.  Both of our classes are doing the program.

Start with running on the cardio section.  Remember cardio is 30 mins or more.
In ME maybe squats, lunges, biking or planks.  Make sure you tell the athlete how often, how long  and how hard.  (Frequency, Intensity and Time)
For MS do HARD exercises, pushups, pull-ups and heavy weights.
For flexibility stretch the muscles you used.  And again - F I T   This is done daily
For body comp you are listing the foods they should eat!

There are no complete rest days, but you do not have to workout every component every day.
Except maybe flexibility, you can do yoga on easy days.

Feel free to let me see how you are doing so I can help you out.  I get to school around 715, earlier if you need me to.  But not too early!
I will put info as needed!  Talk to me if you need more help!

Have fun!

Here is a site with all the components.

FITNESS  (From Hillsborough Middle school)
To prepare; make ready.  A combination of physical and mental attributes that allow you to:
Meet the demands of everyday life and perform tasks that require ABOVE NORMAL EFFORT.
Being physically and mentally Fit, decreases the chance of injury or bodily harm.  Most importantly it can
   improve your quality of life.
There are 5 parts of  fitness:
   1)Cardiovascular Endurance,  2)Muscular Strength, 3)Muscular Endurance, 4)Flexibility and 5)Body Composition.

C - CARDIOVASCULAR ENDURANCE

The most important part of fitness!!!  Having conditioned HEART  and LUNGS that can supply
the body with oxygen without stress to the heart.  We develop it by doing Aerobic Exercise.  Aerobic
Exercise is continuous exercise lasting 2 or more minutes.  In order to improve cardiovascular endurance,
aerobic exercise should be performed at least 3 times per week, 15-20 minutes each day.   Examples of
aerobic exercise-swimming, running, biking, shoveling snow and raking leaves.

MS - MUSCULAR STRENGTH

The amount of force produced by a muscle.  Needed for activities that require above normal effort.  Having
poor muscular strength will increase the chance of getting hurt when doing activities that require above normal
effort.  To increase your muscular strength, you would perform exercises using heavy weight and do the exercise
3-6 times.  The muscles get stronger when they keep working past the point of fatigue (when the muscle
has very little or no energy left).  This forces the body to adapt (muscles get used to doing something,
what was hard is now easy for the muscle).  Remember it takes time to allow your body to adapt!!

ME - MUSCULAR ENDURANCE

The amount of force produced by a muscle over a period of time.  This is also if the muscles are doing
something over and over and over.  Muscular endurance is also closely related to cardiovascular endurance.  Why?
Because in order to perform aerobic exercise long enough (at least 15 minutes) to benefit the heart and lungs,
you need muscular endurance to be able to exercise continuously for this long.  We improve muscular endurance
by using light weight and do the exercise at least 15 times.

F - FLEXIBILITY

The looseness or elasticity of a muscle, which allows the joint to move through a full range of motion.
This is the most neglected part of fitness.  Flexibility is affected by:  1.Gender, 2.Age, 3. Size and condition of muscle
(tone v. bound) & 4.Level of activity. Muscles should always be warmed (by cardio) before they are stretched.
Poor flexibility increases risk of injury.

BC - BODY COMPOSITION

The percentage of body fat compared to lean body tissue.  Lean body tissue is: muscle, bone, water & organs.
Can be a health problem if body fat percentage is not in the 5-30% range.  Scale weight means nothing unless
you know your percent body fat, dont be mislead by height/weight charts-they are inaccurate.
